Does your Dog Jump up? The reason a dog jumps up is to show dominance and to greet people.  He is so glad to see you; he can’t contain his joy. You are  glad to see him too!  But this behavior will be unwelcomed by your guests. He has to be trained not to jump up. With consistent training, it can be very easy to correct. Do not make a big deal about your arrival home. Take about 15 minutes to get yourself organized then greet the dog on his level. Cuddle and pet the dog on his level so that he does [...]

Snow and ice will soon be here. If your dog does not like to have his paws wiped, now is the time to start teaching him to enjoy it - before you actually need to do it! If your dog knows “give a paw”, ask for “paw”, do a quick wipe with a towel, then treat. Gradually increase the length of time you are holding his paw and wiping. Begin practicing with one paw only. Do a different paw the next day and build up to being able to do all 4 in one session. End each practice before the pup stops enjoying it.  Even [...]

It’s Training and Behavior Tuesday! When training your pet remember this: Rewards increase a behavior- good or bad. Remember Kindergarten? When you got a sticker for doing well? Weren’t you more likely to repeat the behavior that earned you that sticker? Well your pet is no different, rewarding a behavior increases the likelihood that it will reoccur. Be careful though, as you could inadvertantly be rewarding a negative behavior i.e. petting your dog when he is barking. You saw it as trying to calm the dog so the barking would cease, but your dog interpretted it as “Good Boy- bark [...]

It’s Training Tip Tuesday! Don’t get frustrated when your pet does not understand what it is that you want them to do. Remember- they do not speak English! They will learn faster if you utilize body language and physical cues such as hand signals along with verbal commands. Eventually, these can be phased out as your pet’s “vocabulary” develops.

Two very important rules when training your dog: Your Role as a Teacher: It is very helpful if you can have a calm demeanor when training your dog. This will relax your dog and give him confidence. The 15 Minute Rule: When training your dog, keep in mind that they can only hold attention for about fifteen minutes at a time. It’s better to do two fifteen minute sessions per day than one half-hour session.

Puppy Training

Puppies learn through play, the same as all baby creatures. So when training a puppy not to nip the best way is in the form of play. Everything to a puppy is a game, and each learning experience is gained from a game. One of the first things your puppy needs to learn is that your are the alpha dog. The most effective way of teaching him that you are the alpha male is by gently rolling him over onto his back when playing. This reinforces that you are the alpha male to the puppy. Do this as often as [...]
